about

This EP borrows its name from the famous jisei, a death poem, written by Yukio Mishima:

A small night storm blows
Saying ‘falling is the essence of a flower’
Preceding those who hesitate

Mishima committed harakiri, a traditional Japanese suicide by the man's own sword, after the failed attempt of coup d'état in 1970. Being a traditionalist and an activist for Japanese rebirth in its former glory, he just couldn't cope with his disappointment when he failed to motivate the soldiers to follow him, so he chose to go out in style.

This audio collage is a tribute to Mishima's work and vision, just as much as it is a tribute to Japan and its culture and people in general. Releasing it in the year of 70th anniversary of nuclear bombardments of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Tokyo air raids, I intended to commemorate this tragedy and remind of a hypocrisy that continues to surround it and other events of our history.

This was my first serious work under the Dmitry et Nihil moniker back in 2015, even though it contains almost no original sounds. Every track builds around a recorded sample of a different style of traditional Japanese music - buddhist chanting shomyo, court music gagaku, and the powerful beating of taiko drum, respectively. Overlayed upon them are samples that I used to bring the picture inside my head into reality.

What I thought about was a sound poem, or maybe a wordless radio play. All three parts have their own plots that combine into one story that goes throughout the whole EP. It has a set of specific characters and events, but I expect you to make it out on your own or maybe find a new meaning to all that.
